Waste & recycling update

We are aware of some delays in waste and recycling collections and advise residents that you should please leave out any missed containers and our contractor will get to you as soon they can.

We are conscious many other areas across the country are also experiencing bin disruptions caused by new Covid absences and the nationwide shortage of HGV drivers; these issues are now affecting many aspects of our daily lives. However, we do expect Serco to deliver on the agreed contract here in the Derbyshire Dales. To help residents understand Serco's position, we have also requested an explanatory statement.

Andrew Smith, Serco's Senior Contract Manager, said:
“Our waste and recycling crews are doing all that they can to minimise the disruption to residents, including working additional hours. I would like to thank both them and the residents of Derbyshire Dales for their continued support at this difficult time.
"We are doing all we can to fill our vacant roles, advertising through a number of channels, offering an enhanced annual salary package including bonuses and other benefits. To thank and support our existing drivers a retention bonus will be paid to them from 1 September. We are also offering career development opportunities that will enable us to grow and develop drivers from within the team - currently 4 of our loaders are enrolled on our driver training and development programme and will be offered driving roles as soon as they are qualified.
"Locally and nationally we are also working with a range of organisations who support the long term unemployed back to work. In addition, flexible hours and job sharing are also on offer, opening up opportunities to those who may not traditionally consider a career in this industry.”

Please note that separate food waste collections continue to be suspended. We’re asking residents to mix your food waste in their usual waste (grey) bin or black sacks. To help prevent animals ripping open sacks in search of food waste, residents on sack rounds can put your usual food caddy out alongside your refuse sacks if you wish, but food inside the caddy does need to be contained within a sealed bag.

As also reported previously, excess recycling will not be collected from 31 August 2021 for 3 months. This measure is designed to ensure all rounds are completed to schedule. If you have a wheeled bin you must contain all recycling in your bin with the lid closed. The insert must be inside the bin and will not be collected if left next to the bin. We’re sorry but any recycling next to the bin either loose or in containers will not be collected. Residents on a sack collection must contain all recycling within your blue box and 2 blue bags. Paper and cardboard must be kept separate from other materials.
