Launchpad project helps kickstart sports coaching business

Young Derbyshire Dales entrepreneur Sheree White’s sports coaching business has been given a kickstart thanks to free business support.

Sheree, 24, based in Matlock, needed help to get started as a sports coach and was put in touch with Growing Rural Enterprise Ltd, which delivers business support through the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Launchpad project in partnership with Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Sheree, pictured (left) with Growing Rural Enterprise's Julie White, attended a number of workshops for new start businesses, creating an action plan and setting challenging but realistic targets. She said:

“I found meeting other businesses at the same stage as my own really helpful and reassuring. Everyone has been very supportive and I found learning how to network well was particularly helpful as it can be quite daunting.

“One challenge is people questioning if you know what you are doing, so the projects helped, the networking is good, and it’s good to get other people's ideas and thoughts on your business. It's helped too knowing all the legal things I needed, particularly when I come to employ people.”

Sheree offers football sessions for toddlers, girls and ladies and hopes to go into primary schools to teach PE and offer holiday and after-school clubs.

Business Mentor Julie White from Growing Rural Enterprise and providing the Launchpad service in the Dales helped to prepare a promotional letter for Sheree to take to schools and provided advice on the best way to staff sessions and and how to recruit and retain volunteers until the business grows and can pay staff.

With ‘match’ funding provided by the District Council, the project receives funding from the European Regional Development Fund, part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. Additional funding also comes from the SCR Combined Authority.

Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, Councillor Lewis Rose OBE said:

"The free workshops delivered by Growing Rural Enterprise are for any new local businesses that are thinking of expanding or taking on employees. They are a great opportunity also for businesses to network, boost their knowledge and learn about other support available in the area."
