The funeral service of a former Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council, Hubert Doxey JP MBE, will be held at St Mary's Church, Wirksworth, this Wednesday (3 February) at 12.30pm, followed by burial at Middleton Cemetery (1.30pm).
Born at Middleton by Wirksworth, William Hubert Doxey was a steam engine and diesel train driver by profession who made his mark on the local political scene.
Chairman of the former Wirksworth Urban District Council as far back as 1957, he held that office on four further occasions until that body was replaced by Derbyshire Dales District Council in 1974.
A senior member of the Labour group on the successor District Council, he was elected District Council Chairman in 1980-81. A Magistrate and instigator of The Dale Restoration Scheme in Wirksworth, Mr Doxey was an enthusiastic pipe smoker who knew the rules of debate extremely well, influencing the District Council's current Constitution.
