'Scheduling' refers to the legal system for protecting nationally important archaeological sites in England. Its aim is to preserve significant examples of the archaeological resource for the educational and cultural benefit of future generations.
Scheduled monuments are designated and added to a 'Schedule' by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport under powers contained in the Ancient Monuments & Archaeological Areas Act 1979 (as amended). In making decisions on scheduling the Secretary of State is advised by Historic England, which takes the leading role in identifying sites in England for designation. This is an ongoing process and sites and monuments are frequently added to the schedule. The District Council cannot, and does not, 'schedule' monuments or archaeological sites.
Within the Derbyshire Dales District (outside the National Park) there are currently 64 scheduled monuments. These are shown on the table at the bottom of this page. The District Council holds maps identifying each site, and its extent, together with the official written description of the monument. These maps & descriptions can be viewed at the Council offices in Matlock, by appointment.
Any proposed works which may affect a scheduled monument may require 'Scheduled Monument Consent'*. Applications for consent are made directly to Historic England (not the District Council) who will consider and assess the proposals and, where deemed acceptable, issue Scheduled Monument Consent for the works to be undertaken. Anyone proposing works which may affect a scheduled monument, or works within the vicinity of a scheduled monument, are advised to contact Historic England ** to discuss their proposals.
* You may want to discuss your proposals with an archaeologist (Institute of Field Archaeologists registered) prior to making a formal application to English Heritage.
