Policy
The District Council has over several years allowed memorial benches to be donated, in memory of loved ones, and placed in locations under its responsibility such as cemeteries, recreation grounds, parks and beauty spots.
The Memorial Bench Policy has been reviewed and revised and was adopted by the Community & Environment Committee 9th February 2023. It became effective from 1st April 2023 and supersedes any other policies. Memorial Bench Policy document
Please note that although some trees have been planted in the past in memory of a loved one, they are no longer included in the policy.
Locations
Whilst we will endeavour to fulfil requests where possible, some areas, particularly Bakewell & Monsal Head, are very popular and we have a number of requests on our waiting list.
Design
Benches are a standard design and sourced in line with the Council’s procurement regulations. The Council will not accept any non-standard benches and sponsors will not be allowed to carry out any customisations or repairs.
The design is called The Dale, measuring 1800 mm / 6 feet, and is manufactured, by a local company, from 100% recycled UK plastic lumber, which has the aesthetics of wood, with the durability of plastic.
Fees & charges 2024 / 2025
- Memorial Bench £537.25 (no VAT)
- Installation and administration £450.00 (no VAT)
- Stainless Steel Plaque 100mm x 50mm £51.95 (includes VAT)
- Stainless Steel Plaque 150mm x 50mm £56.95 (includes VAT)
- Stainless Steel Plaque 125mm x 75mm £62 (includes VAT)
- Stainless Steel Plaque 150mm x 75mm £67.05 (includes VAT)
Total cost (dependent on plaque) £1,039.20 to £1,054.30
Installation of additional or replacement plaque on existing bench, cost of plaque plus £50 installation / administration fee (includes VAT)
A differentiation in fees applies for local and non-residents which is double fee.

Application process
If you are interested in applying for a memorial bench, please complete the Expression of Interest form
Applications will be acknowledged and sponsors advised of the current situation and timescales.
It is anticipated that applications will, mainly, be processed with installations taking place between April and October.

Current stock
We are reviewing current stock and, where benches are past their life expectancy, contacting sponsors to advise of removal and to offer the opportunity to replace the bench.
Where the sponsor does not wish to enter into a new agreement, the space will be offered to another on the waiting list.
