Surveys in the Market Place

From 22 April 2024, detailed surveys of the surface on the Market Place are scheduled to begin and take place over a number of days over the following fortnight. The surveys are weather dependent and need the Market Place surface to be clear, so businesses with sitting out licences will be contacted to arrange temporary removal of outdoor furniture. Residents that park cars overnight may be asked to use different areas of the Market Place.

To minimise disruption, the surveys will begin early in the morning in advance of normal business hours and be carried out in sections. It is hoped this approach will avoid the need to close the car park, however we will provide more information if additional intervention is required to complete the work accurately and safely.

Why are the surveys necessary?

Led by the County Council, the highways and public ream project within the Ashbourne Reborn programme will transform a series of public spaces including the Market Place, Victoria Square, Millennium Square and Shrovetide Walk. The surveys will provide vital information to help teams carry out this work.

The Market Place has historically been a focal point for activities, trade and people, not vehicles, and we want to restore this sense of vibrancy to the heart of the town. Parking will be removed, and the Grade II listed surfaces which date back to the 18th or early 19th century will be repaired and upgraded. Areas of asphalt will be replaced with limestone setts to match existing and local character, improving the space for Ashbourne’s vibrant programme of local events.

The highways and public realm project will also include works to the road network on Compton, Dig Street, St John Street and Buxton Road. This will help transform the pedestrian experience in Ashbourne, with wider footways and new and improved crossings around the town centre.
