The District Council is responsible for enforcement of Health and Safety Legislation in a variety of workplace settings such as shops, offices, leisure sites (caravan sites, hotels, gyms, and general holiday accommodation), warehousing and residential care homes. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) are a co-regulator and enforce standards within higher risk businesses such as factories, mines, quarries and farms. The Health, Safety and Welfare duties apply to protect the Public and Employees.
Our Environmental Health Commercial Team undertakes a number of health and safety investigations, depending on circumstances. All workplaces are covered by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the regulations made under it.
We also follow up reports of accidents in workplaces to find out the cause and to ensure that preventable incidents do not happen again. Certain types of accidents have to be reported to the Council by law. More information is available from the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations website.
If we receive a complaint about health and safety at work we will investigate in order to make sure that the law is being followed and that the workplace is safe. Whilst we do not generally investigate anonymous complaints, anyone wishing to report a problem to us can be assured that it will be dealt with in confidence.
The Council undertakes inspections when needed to investigate concerns, review accident information, and for proactive inspections. Details of the priority areas are detailed within the Service Plan. The HSE provide Local Authorities with guidance for service planning and setting national priorities, on a yearly basis.
