Queen's Baton Relay in the Dales on 11 July

The Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) came to Bakewell on Monday 11 July 2022 - and we had lots of activities taking place in Bakewell Recreation Ground.

Heralding the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer, the baton relay stopped off at the Heights of Abraham at 4.30pm on 11 July before moving on in a vehicle convoy to arrive in Bakewell at 5.30pm.

The baton was in Bakewell for 20 minutes and was run around the Recreation Ground before moving through Granby Street and Water Street, cheered on by locals.

In the park itself TrYumph in Life provided free children’s sports activities in a ‘Mini Commonwealth Games’ alongside our Sports Development team, and local musician Riley Marsh entertained the crowds.

Derbyshire Dales District Council Bakewell ward member Councillor Mark Wakeman, who joined in the revelry, said:

"I want to send a big thank you to all the Derbyshire Dales staff, the police and security people who helped to put this event on.

"It was a credit to the council and it was a pleasure and an honour to see the Queen's Baton Relay coming through our town. A big thank you also to the shops and cafes that stayed open for the relay to make the event extra special."
The four Queen's Baton Relay carriers in Bakewell were Danny Bent, Gaby Vauclair, Chris Allen and Ben Holmes.
