Have your say on parish and town council electoral arrangements

A Community Governance review is underway to gauge local interest in taking forward proposals to change the size, boundaries and warding arrangements of three parish and town councils affected by the revised Derbyshire Dales District Council warding arrangements for Matlock and Darley Dale.

In their final report earlier this year the Local Government Boundary Commission recommended that the Derbyshire Dales district should be represented by 34 councillors, which is five fewer than currently, and 21 wards - a reduction of four.

They also recommended that the boundaries of 17 wards should change, with just three remaining the same. To facilitate these Ward changes the Commission has added new parish wards to the town councils of Matlock and Darley Dale and split the parish of South Darley between two District Council Wards.

The objective of the Community Governance review is to make sure the governance of the affected town and parish councils continue to be effective and convenient and reflect the identities and interests of local communities.

A District Council spokesperson said:
"Recommendations arising from any community governance review should deliver improved community engagement, more cohesive communities, better local democracy and result in more efficient delivery of local services.

"In this consultation we genuinely want to hear from local residents on whether they think there is a need for change or are happy with the way things are."
If there is an appetite for change the District Council will consult on more specific proposals before the next Parish and Town Council elections in May 2023.

Anyone wanting to make review representations should send them by 24 July 2022 to the Director of Corporate & Customer Services, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Town Hall, Matlock DE4 3NN or email electoral@derbyshiredales.gov.uk
