Holiday programme for Dales youngsters

Activity days for local children from disadvantaged families will take place at Derbyshire Dales leisure centres in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth early in 2022.

The free fun-packed days are being organised by Derbyshire Dales District Council and partner Freedom Leisure, which operate the council's leisure centres in the three towns.

Any family with a child who receives benefits-related free school can book now for the days at Arc Leisure Matlock (5-11 years) on Tuesday 4 January, Wirksworth Leisure Centre (7-16 years) on Wednesday 5 January and Ashbourne Leisure Centre (5-11 years) on Thursday 6 January. Every day runs from 9am to 3.30pm.

The days are being funded by Derbyshire County Council and the Government's Holiday, Activity & Food project.

The District Council's Community Development Manager Becky Bryan said:
"School holidays can be challenging for some families because of the increased cost of food and childcare.
"These activity days are designed to address some of those issues and include traditional sports, enrichment and healthy eating activities. The young people will be able to make their own smoothies with a smoothie bike, plus there will be climbing on the climbing wall at Wirksworth Leisure Centre and, importantly, opportunities for the children to socialise."
Any child who receives free school meals is entitled to the free activity days.
