BINS UPDATE - Monday 25 October

Industrial action called by the GMB Union in a pay dispute with Serco continues. Work-to-rule measures, including an overtime ban, mean scheduled collections continue to be disrupted and delayed across the Derbyshire Dales.

Residents will also know that a national shortage of HGV drivers has put pressure on collections for several months now. This morning we received news from Serco that four drivers have reported sick, meaning two scheduled rounds cannot go out today - see the affected areas at the foot of this article.

We therefore regret that if there is no resolution between Serco and the GMB Union in the next 24 hours we have no option but to call from tomorrow (Tuesday) a re-set of collections.

This means that although crews will continue to attempt to catch up with any domestic waste collections missed last week, all missed recycling and garden waste collections will unfortunately remain missed. Scheduled domestic waste, recycling and garden waste rounds will start afresh tomorrow.

Separate food waste collections remain suspended and crews cannot take any excess waste as to do so would simply mean some residents not getting a collection at all. They will however attempt to take excess recycling where collections have been missed for two weeks or more.

We understand this will be disappointing and frustrating news for residents who have suffered bin disruptions in recent times, but we have no other options available to us other than to urge again that GMB and Serco reach agreement in talks that we have offered to facilitate.

Even re-setting does not guarantee all scheduled collections will take place. While two new drivers are due to start work tomorrow, industrial action plus any continued sickness among driving staff means some rounds may not be completed.
  • Due to driver sicknesses domestic waste will not be collected today on some streets usually serviced by a smaller vehicle in Alkmonton, Biggin by Hulland, Brailsford, Hollington, Hulland Ward, Kirk Ireton, Mercaston, Middleton by Wirksworth, Turnditch, Weston Underwood and Wirksworth.
  • Also garden waste will not be collected on some streets usually serviced by a smaller vehicle in Abney, Bradwell, Grindleford, Hassop, Hathersage, Little Hucklow, Litton Mill, Millers Dale, Rowland, Tideswell and Wheston.
  • Finally, please note that some streets in Bradwell, Bretton, Foolow, Great Hucklow, Grindleford, Little Hucklow, Millers Dale and Taddington will a domestic waste collection today (which was not collected last Monday due to the union strike) instead of recycling.
