To help the Council's waste and recycling partner Serco to prioritise daily collections during the continuing coronavirus pandemic, sports development team members are currently delivering the annual supply of compostable garden sacks to 2,000 homes across the Dales.
The sacks are used by households that cannot accommodate wheelie bins for their fortnightly garden waste collection, usually due to the location of their property.
The District Council's Chief Executive Paul Wilson said:
"We have a 'One Team' ethos here at the Council and I'm proud of the way sports development colleagues volunteered to help out.
"Covid-19 continues to put pressure on some services we deliver, including waste, recycling and garden waste collections, which are now back on schedule after some disruption early in the lockdown but where staff are working at absolute capacity.
"We don't want to compromise the consistency of daily collections, which is why sports development are doing the deliveries in between their regular activities over the coming weeks."
