Bakewell car park closed to protect site

The 420-space Agricultural Business Centre (ABC) car park in Bakewell has been closed by Derbyshire Dales District Council to protect the site.

In recent days new groups of Travellers have located themselves in the car park, which adjoins Bakewell Showground - and local intelligence suggests other groups may be on the way.

A District Council spokesperson said:
"While we are conscious closing the ABC car park will put added pressure on Bakewell's other car parks going into the coming weekend, we cannot risk the site being compromised further.
"This is an incredibly difficult site to operate access-wise as the ABC continues to host regular livestock markets, which are vital to our local farming community. The nature of the vehicles they use means that height barriers, for example, are impractical."

In March this year the District Council successfully obtained an Order to evict Travellers from the ABC, but the Court specified that the Order could not be executed until coronavirus restrictions were lifted. This position has subsequently been backed up by Government and Police guidance.

The Council is currently preparing an application to the Magistrates’ Court to test the strength of this guidance.
