Long standing Matlock councillor Steve Flitter's fund-raising year as Derbyshire Dales District Council’s civic leader really took off - boosting the local Air Ambulance service's coffers by £5,501.
The Matlock St Giles ward member since 1985 represented the district at scores of public engagements in the county in his year as Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales, which ended in May.
No stranger to a chain of office – he has served four terms as Mayor of Matlock – Councillor Flitter pledged to raise funds for the local Air Ambulance through a series of fund-raising events, including an auction, grand raffle, lunchtime bingo session organised by District Council staff, a snooker challenge and celebration of fine wines.
And now he and wife Ann have presented a cheque to the Air Ambulance's Volunteer Derbyshire Community Representative Richard Fletcher.
Councillor Flitter, the second longest serving councillor on the authority after its leader, Councillor Lewis Rose, said:
"It was a brilliant year and an honour to represent the Derbyshire Dales. Raising this amount of money for such a worthy life-saving local charity was the icing on the cake and I want to thank the many people who helped along the way, volunteering their time and donating prizes, and my wife Ann, who was at my side throughout.
"I was proud to revive the council’s community awards scheme and to follow in the footsteps as District Chairman of fellow councillors who were role models for me when I was first elected 33 years ago, the likes of Peggy Edwards, Hubert Doxey and Christine Crowther. It was a memorable year."
Richard Fletcher (pictured above, centre, with Councillor and Mrs Flitter, said:
“I was delighted to be part of this fantastic achievement; their passion and support for our service is truly fantastic. DLRAA relies entirely on donations from members of the public as it receives no Government or National Lottery funding. Therefore, support from people such as Councillor Flitter and Derbyshire Dales District Council is invaluable and goes a long way to helping to keep our lifesaving service flying and saving lives.
"We would like to thank everyone who supported this fantastic fundraising effort and for their generosity. This donation will help us save three lives."
