Nursery dream becomes a reality

Vicky Sellers has realised her dream of opening her own day nursery - thanks to free business advice from your District Council.

An experienced nursery manager, Vicky acquired a property in the centre of Ashbourne in 2016, and her builder husband Stuart set about converting it into a modern up-to-date, fully accessible day nursery for children aged two to five.

The Derbyshire Dales Business Advice service, part of the D2N2 Growth Hub, helped Vicky, pictured above with two of the nursery’s children, successfully applied for grant funding to help her equip the nursery - named Parkgate – to create an outside play area with bespoke outdoor equipment, a new baby room and a kitchen area for meal preparation.

"After buying the building and carrying out all the necessary building work, we were determined to finish and equip the nursery to the highest possible standard," said Vicky," an NNEB qualified nursery manager and mother of three children.

"The advice we received was absolutely invaluable. As a mum myself I understand the difficulties faced by working parents, which is why I open the nursery from 7.30am – 6.00pm to meet their needs."

Grant funding has helped Vicky and Stuart create a facility finished to a very high specification throughout, offering children superb facilities. As well as two spacious rooms there are two outdoor play areas with indoor sand pit, ‘mud’ kitchen, toys and garden.

Ofsted registered, the nursery helps families who either live or work in the area. Situated on the edge of the town centre opposite the park, it’s ideal for Ashbourne residents and also those living in the surrounding villages who can drop their children off on their way to work.

Vicky already has a number of two to five year-olds attending the nursery and is holding an Open Day on Saturday 14 July 10am – 2pm for parents who are looking for nursery provision in the Ashbourne area. The baby room opens in March 2019 and bookings are also being taken now for that facility.

District Council Leader, Councillor Lewis Rose OBE said:

"It’s great news that our business advice service, delivered in partnership with the D2N2 Growth Hub, continues to help local companies achieve their business ambitions, creating new services and opportunities here in the Derbyshire Dales.”
