New upgrade for Ashbourne Leisure Centre

Work has started to further upgrade Derbyshire Dales District Council's Ashbourne Leisure Centre.

In recent years, the centre's pool has been plagued by water temperature and humidity issues, due to plant reaching the end of its operating life.

The problem was first identified in June 2016 and it was agreed this time last year to invest £200,000 for essential work to replace the wetside boiler and dehumidifier plant in a brand new plant room on the edge of the former skate park area to bring the operating plant up to modern standards for the future.

The work will mean the closure of the pool from Monday 16 April to Sunday 29 April 2018 with a scheduled reopening for Monday 30 April 2018.

A District Council spokesperson said:

"This is a much-needed upgrade that will solve the pool temperature and humidity problems, which will be welcome news for regular users.

“The work has been organised to minimise disturbance to the operation of the pool by installing the new plant while the existing plant keeps running. The closure is needed to allow the pipework to be swapped over at the end of the project. The operation of the remainder of the leisure centre is unaffected."

Four years ago a £175,000 Sport England grant saw the creation of a new open plan “changing village” for the swimming pool to complement the modernisation in 2003 of the centre’s reception area and dry side facilities.

At the same time, the District Council, which also operates leisure centres in Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth, funded improvements to the energy efficiency of the building by providing new domestic hot and cold water services, new air handling plant, new low temperature heating circuits, improved control systems, new lighting and security upgrades.

This was followed by a further £60,000 of external funding that saw the creation of an extended accessible fitness suite - and last year an old community room was transformed into a state-of-the-art studio and functional training room.

  • Customers should claim a refund at the leisure centre reception on their direct debit payments; cancelled swimming lessons and existing annual swimming memberships will be extended by two weeks to compensate for the pool closure.
