The coundown has begun to the 23rd annual Victorian Matlock Christmas Weekend & Markets, which takes place in our fabulous Hall Leys Park from 1-3 December.
Organised jointly by Matlock Town Council, Matlock Business Group and Matlock Community Organisations with assistance from the District Council, the weekend now ranks as one of the top Christmas events in the East Midlands, attracting visitors from all over the UK and abroad.
And parking is FREE in our car parks after 2pm throughout December.
Many of the 170+ stalls are housed in three heated and carpeted marquees, with others outside in the park contributing to the brilliant festive atmosphere.
There are many new stalls in 2017, along with old favourites, including traditional crafts, local produce, Christmas gifts and festive refreshments including the now renowned mulled wine stall provided by The Rotary Club of Matlock. Matlock Derwent Valley Lions Club will once again be providing Santa’s Grotto on the Saturday and Sunday, with the proceeds from both Clubs supporting local charities.
The comprehensive entertainment programme, including Proctor's funfair, has been further extended this year to include roller skating Illuminated Christmas characters, a steel band, carnival showband and a Highland Band, along with favourites including James McKay and his owls, Circus Whiz, a street organ and even visitors from "another galaxy"!
A highlight will take place on the Saturday afternoon when Santa’s Christmas Parade will make its way at 4.15pm along Bakewell Road, through Crown Square, along Causeway Lane and back over Matlock Bridge and along Dale Road. The Parade will include the Ambassadors of Borrowash Carnival Showband, new to the event this year, and a selection of models from the famous Matlock Bath Illuminations Boat Parade. Following the Parade the switch-on of the Matlock Christmas Lights will take place at the Hall Leys Park Bandstand
This year the event has been working with Buxton Opera House and their pantomime Star Jessica Revell from CBBC’s Tracy Beaker and the The Dumping Ground, who will be appearing in Sleeping Beauty from 9-31 December. Also appearing will be Gareth Evans, the popular Breakfast presenter on East Midlands Smooth Radio.
Sunday's event finale will be the traditional breathtaking Christmas fireworks display.
Councillor Steve Flitter, for Matlock Town Council, said:
“The Town Council are pleased to be associated with the business community in providing an event which has become so popular in Matlock and I am delighted that its reputation is not just high with residents but with people from all over the East Midlands and beyond.”
Geoff Stevens MBE, chair of the Joint Organising group, said:
“It is important for people to be aware of the hard work that is undertaken by the Town Council and the many individuals who give their time and expertise to make sure that the event improves year on year. More volunteers are required not only to plan the event but to provide practical assistance during the event. What is sometimes overlooked is the many thousands of pounds that have been raised from the event for local charities over the years.”
Event times are:
- FRIDAY December 1: 10am-6pm
- SATURDAY December 2: 9.30am-7pm
- SUNDAY December 3: 9.30am-6pm
