We're supporting Small Business Saturday

Your District Council is backing Small Business Saturday UK this Saturday (5 December) - the national campaign to encourage people to support independent local shops.

With around 94% of Derbyshire Dales businesses employing fewer than 10 people, small businesses are the lifeblood of the local economy.

Taking place on one of the busiest shopping days in the year, the aim of the Small Business Saturday UK campaign is to encourage people to 'Shop Local' and support small businesses in their communities.

Parks and Streetscene officer Helen Carrington promotes the free December parking incentiveFor the eighth year, the District Council has introduced free parking after 2pm at its car parks throughout the month of December to boost the local economy - and is using its communications channels to get right behind the national campaign to support independent businesses by encouraging people to Shop Local this Christmas.

Small Business Saturday coincides with a number of local events in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales, including the annual Matlock Victorian Christmas Market, organised by the Town Council, which the District Council hosts free of charge in its award-winning Hall Leys Park.

District Council Leader Councillor Lewis Rose OBE said:

"We are extremely proud of our small business community here in the Derbyshire Dales and make no apology for using all our communications channels to push the Shop Local message at this important time of year for the local economy.

"Creating a thriving local economy is the number one priority for Derbyshire Dales residents, and business growth and job creation are at the top of the list on the District Council's new Corporate Plan.

"Our free parking initiative is designed to boost local shops and businesses, not only on Small Business Saturday, but throughout the whole of December."
