Derbyshire Dales District Council is now working in partnership with Crowfoot Kennels to pick up any stray dogs reported across the district.
The new contract started this month and Crowfoot can receive and deal with enquiries regarding lost, found and stray dogs 24 hours a day 365 days a year - and the team there is available to collect stray dogs 8am to 7pm daily, with the option of dropping stray dogs at the kennels until 10pm.
Based in Church Broughton since 2008, originally as a boarding kennels, Crowfoot Kennels already has contracts with two other Derbyshire councils - South Derbyshire District and Derby City - collecting a total of between 75 and 100 dogs a month.
Crowfoot Kennels is run by husband and wife Karen and Dean Gregory. Said Karen:
"Our aim is to return dogs to their rightful owners, which is a simple process if they are chipped, or to find a new forever home as quickly as possible for any unclaimed dogs to ensure they don't get too stressed during their stay.
"When a dog is taken back to our kennels it is treated no differently than a boarding dog would be. It is fed, watered, put in a warm cosy bed in a kennel with a run and exercised and cared for in just the same way.
"After seven days we are legally bound to try to re-house the dog if no-one comes forward to claim it, and it then goes into our rescue centre. No dog is put to sleep unnecessarily - only as a last resort if it is very ill or has a violent temperament unsuitable for a family home.
"The bottom line is that everyone who works at Crowfoot is a dog lover and all find it really rewarding when an unclaimed dog is placed in a new family home."
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council's Community & Environment Committee, Councillor Jo Wild said:
"We are absolutely delighted to working in partnership with Crowfoot Kennels, a company that not only has a proud record of responding quickly to reports of stray dogs, but one that takes such a positive attitude to dogs in its care."
