A headline on the front page of this week's Matlock Mercury newspaper 'Illuminations Under Review' seems to have prompted some people to jump to the conclusion that the last night of our 2014 Matlock Bath Illuminations has been cancelled. This is NOT the case.
The District Council, which organises one of the region's most popular attractions, would like to stress that the Illuminations definitely do go ahead tomorrow (Saturday 25 October), complete with the famous parade of decorated boats and a fireworks finale at 9pm.
The Mercury article does not make any reference to the last night event but, as we all know, many people only read a headline - as evidenced by the phone calls we are receiving today.
We are also at pains to point out, as we did to the Mercury, that all the services we provide are currently under review (not just the Illuminations) and that we are confident this year of once again achieving our target of operating the fabulous and historic event – in its 117th year - on a break-even basis at no cost to local Council Tax payers.
- Please note that because the last night of the Illuminations is traditionally the busiest of the entire season, all car parks in Matlock Bath are likely to be full several hours before our Derwent Gardens ticket offices open at 5pm on Saturday.
- We therefore recommend the regular East Midlands train service on the Derwent Valley line, which stops at Matlock Bath, and our park and ride service from County Offices in Matlock and Cromford Meadows.
