Housing Benefit is a national benefit with rules decided by the Department for Work & Pensions with financial payments being made to low income households to help them afford their rent. Housing Benefit fraud occurs where claimants make false statements concerning their circumstances or fail to report changes in circumstances likely to affect their entitlement.

From 3rd September 2015 responsibility for investigating Housing Benefit fraud transferred from Derbyshire Dales District Council to a new Department for Work & Pensions Team called the Single Fraud Investigation Service or SFIS.
