Derbyshire Dales District Council is delighted to manage and maintain Ashbourne Recreation Ground and Memorial Gardens.
The District Council provides facilities in this town centre haven for local bowls, cricket, football and rugby clubs (contact details below) and a multi-use games area for 5-a-side football, tennis and basketball that can be booked by calling 01629 761 225 or emailing email@example.com. A small car park on the edge of the park can be accessed from Cokayne Avenue. The District Council's main Shaw Croft car park in Ashbourne is located nearby (DE6 1DG).
- There is a fee for some activities in our parks, including tennis, bowling greens, sports pitches etc. For further details please visit our Sports Pitches and Activities page.
Exciting new dry play equipment was part of a comprehensive upgrade in the summer of 2009 at the Recreation Ground that included re-turfing work - and new interactive splashpads. Please note the splash pads are undergoing essential maintenance and will remain closed during the continuing coronavirus pandemic to ensure that social distancing requirements are met.
After listening to what residents and especially young people said was needed in the town, Derbyshire Dales District Council secured £200,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to create new play areas both in Ashbourne and at our recreation ground in Bakewell, and invested a further £170,000 into the projects.
The park revamp also included the provision of boundary fencing, gates and upgraded paths.
While the Recreation Ground is a great centre for activity, the adjoining Memorial Gardens are designed for relaxation, including the bandstand, which is a shelter in the heart of the gardens. Ashbourne Memorial Gardens are dedicated to those who died for their country. Look out also for the statue commemorating the life of Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army, who was born in Ashbourne.
The formal gardens, fringing Cokayne Avenue and Park Road, are beautifully offset by the delightful open spaces of Fishpond Meadow, accessed via two river bridges.
Local sporting organisations using the District Council's Recreation Ground, which includes two sports pavilions, a bowling green, cricket pitch, two football pitches, a junior football pitch and rugby pitch, include:
The District Council's main Ashbourne public conveniences - rebuilt in the summer of 2011 - are situated in the Shaw Croft car park.
Derbyshire Dales District Council appreciates your help in caring for the Recreation Ground and Memorial Gardens. Enjoy the play and recreation facilities and please use the litter bins and look after the trees, plants and play equipment. Thank you.
