Victorian Christmas Market beats weather

Matlock's annual Victorian Christmas Market is to go ahead this weekend despite heavy winds wreaking havoc during Thursday's set-up.

The popular three-day event in our Hall Leys Park - organised by the Christmas Committee and Matlock Town Council - opens at 10 on Friday morning.  Here's a statement from the Committee Chairman.

This despite Thursday's gales leaving one of the marquees on its end near the park bandstand, which miraculously escaped damage, protected by mature trees when the giant structure took off. See our photos on Facebook.

Some special events traders will not be able to trade on Friday, but an important Matlock tradition has been saved. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm Friday, 9.30am to 7pm Saturday and 9.30am to 6pm Sunday.

It wasn't such good news on Thursday evening for the Matlock Town Team, which had to abandon plans for a Christingle service at the Park Head. This event - and a visit by Santa - were switched to the TwentyTen bar on Dale Road, but a planned performance by Dale Diva couldn't take place. However, late night shopping was unaffected.

  • Don't forget there's festive shopping in Ashbourne on Friday night. Shops open until 9pm and look out for market stalls, music, a lantern parade and of course FREE parking courtesy of your District Council (after 2pm every day in December).
