Our curtain raiser to London Games

Hours before the spectacular opening of the London 2012 Games there was a real Olympics feel to the Derbyshire Dales' own Village Games at Carsington Water.
Around 600 young people enjoyed the Olympic and Paralympic theme at Village Games 2012, with a host of demonstrations, taster sessions and fun for all the family last Friday.
Derbyshire Dales District Council and High Peak Borough Council jointly organised the event at Severn-Trent Water's Carsington Water attraction.
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council's Communities Committee Councillor Mrs Carol Walker said:
"In Olympics year our team led by Village Games coordinator Katy Stubbs aimed to make Village Games 2012 even bigger and better than the very successful 2011 event - and we did just that, with a total attendance of almost 1,000 young people and adults.
"Our thanks go to local sports clubs and providers who showcased their talents, and to the many leisure staff and volunteers who organised a whole host of attractions including inflatable fun, arts and crafts, a barbecue, fun run, parachute games, football, tug of war, archery, wildlife walks, face painting and much more."
Young people had an opportunity to have their photograph taken with an official Olympic Torch, on show at the event with its owner Sarah Needham, a student at Matlock's Highfields School, who was one of the Torchbearers during the Olympic flame's tour of the UK.
