Hartington Young People's Activity Club

The Hartington Young People's Activity Club offers sporting and physical activity opportunities to children aged 8 – 16 years on a weekly basis during term time and has an active partnership with Derbyshire Village Games, Derby County in the Community and Adventurous Activities Team.  The club is run and supported by local residents who see the value of offering the children a social and educational environment outside of the school setting, with 35 children registered from Hartington and neighbouring villages.

The club also supports 8 young leaders who are currently working towards their Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership (delivered by Derbyshire Village Games), which is not only beneficial for the individuals in terms of personal development but it is hoped on completion that the young leaders take an active role in the delivery of the sessions and achieving an independent sustainable club.

Tideswell Chair-Based Exercise Class

Working in partnership with the Farming Life Centre, Derbyshire Dales Village Games has helped to establish a sustainable Chair Based Exercises class programme which is hosted at Nicholson Court sheltered housing accommodation in Tideswell.

Open for both residents and non-residents, a 12 week free taster course was delivered by a Health trainer from the Farming Life Centre and during this period the exercise progressed week by week and participants are now using resistance bands and can feel the benefits of the exercise.

The exercises are designed to help loosen joints and strengthen the body, which is a great way to prevent falls and the ladies who attend really enjoy the classes but particularly enjoy meeting new people from the village.

Following on from this success Village Games, supported the Council's Walking for Health Officer to establish a new Walking for Health group in the village which now operates fortnightly and is growing in popularity.

'I enjoy the exercise but I really enjoy having a good natter!'

'I know how much it's improved my suppleness a bit each week'

Cycling

We have worked in partnership with the Youth Sports Development Officer at Derbyshire Dales District Council who has linked with British Cycling Breeze Network to develop led rides for women (small children welcome) from Hassop Station near Baslow. The rides are led by qualified cycle leaders and are based around getting more women into riding bikes for fun. The ride has recently developed into a weekly ride and is usually one hour long at a speed to suit everybody. The women who attend really enjoy the ride as it's a great way to get active in a social, child friendly environment.

'I would never have even thought about going cycling if it wasn't for this women's social ride'

'It's a fantastic way to keep fit whilst meeting new people'

Youlgrave Zumba

Youlgrave Zumba started in September 2013 and is said to be the busiest fitness class to take place in the village hall. The class is not like any other Zumba class there is a mixture of Latin American, Salsa and Cha-Cha-Cha dancing with a bit of fitness added in as well. Consultation with the local residents made it clear that Zumba would be a big hit so Derbyshire Dales Village Games worked in partnership with a local instructor to help set up the class.

The class is delivered by a qualified Zumba instructor who lives in Youlgrave and has a passion for dancing and getting the local community active.

The class has over 35 women registered with an average of 20 people attending each week; unfortunately no men have yet joined the class.

It's an ideal class for the residents of Youlgrave and surrounding villages, as it's on their doorstep so they don't have to travel to their nearest leisure centre to keep fit whilst having fun.

Everyone that attends the class thoroughly enjoys Zumba and due to popular demand it has led to an evening class starting in a nearby village.
