Bakewell Stall Market

The beautiful Peak District town of Bakewell has had a market since 1330. The town's Livestock and Stall Markets continue to attract tourists and visitors, as well as providing an essential service to the local community. The Monday market in the centre of the town boasts around 80 stalls.

Ample car and coach parking is available at the Agricultural Business Centre, which is close to the town centre.

Follow our Markets page on Facebook.

In addition to the popular Monday stall market, The District Council operates the farmers' market at the Agricultural Business Centre monthly, usually on the last Saturday of the month.

The Agricultural Business Centre is now not only widely recognised as home to one of the UK's top livestock markets – it has one of the largest farmers' market in the area.

With many 1,000s of events, conferences and meetings staged at the Agricultural Business Centre since it opened and 75 livestock auctions a year involving 300,000 animals, the Agricultural Business Centre is a thriving operation and a true 'one-stop shop' service for the rural community.

Becoming a trader

If you are thinking of starting a new business, or want to extend your existing venture into a new area, then a market stall could be right up your street.

Becoming a trader is a low-risk, low-cost way to turn your business dream into reality:

Start small and grow

Being a trader is an ideal way into retail for any budding entrepreneur. In fact, the founders of some of the country’s most successful High Street names started out on a market stall – Morrison’s, Marks & Spencer and JJB Sports to name a few!

Low cost

You can start your own pitch in Derbyshire Dales from as little as £26.30 per week, with relatively small overheads.

Flexibility

Market trading allows you to be flexible and take your trade to your customers, without being tied into expensive long-term property leases. Plus it’s up to you how many hours a week you want to work.

Develop your skills

Trading allows you to be your own boss and develop self-discipline. It’s also great way to build many other skills essential for business, such as sales and negotiation, numerical and social skills.

Make connections

Market trading offers a great way of life in many aspects. You get to interact with the public and fellow traders, building a good network of customers, colleagues and a great sense of community.

Getting started

There is a whole range of information and practical advice available to help get you started – and most of it free:

National Market Federation

This is a national organisation which represents market traders. You can become a member for a small annual subscription, which includes the necessary public, product and employer’s insurance which you will need to trade. They also have a lot of information on their website for new starters.

Market Stall Allocation

To get a stall on a Casual Trader basis you need to arrive at the market on a Monday and report to one of the Market Team any time after 7:30am. One of the Market Team will then take your details and add you to the waiting list for that day only. Once the Market Team know how many stalls are available allocation of stalls will begin. The District Council's allocation of stalls is at the discretion of the Market Team and their decision is final.

A stall will only be allocated to a casual if:

  • You are a current and paid up member of the National Market Traders' Federation (NMTF) or
  • You have Public Liability Insurance to a minimum policy value of £10m. (A copy of your insurance certificate is needed for our records)
  • Your products do not exceed our line limit for the market. (ie if there are already 6 stall holders selling "Confectionery" then you may not be allocated a stall)
  • The only stall available is not next to or on the same row as a trader selling the same or similar products as you. The stall will not be allocated if you have similar goods.
  • You pay by card as the market is cashless.

Reserve or book?

We do not currently provide a reserve or pre-book service for our stalls, it is, therefore, not guaranteed that you will be allocated a stall and you may be turned away from the market on that day.

What we will provide

The District Council will provide the stall unless you are paying a fee for a pitch; you will need to provide your own clips, top cover or rain sheet (recommended size 4m x 3m).

Bakewell Farmers' Market

Bakewell Farmers' Market is held at the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell on the last Saturday of each month. To discuss stall availability please contact the Agricultural Business Centre.

Prior arrangement for a pitch must be made first as you will be rejected if you turn up on the day.

Sharing Information

We may share your information with other bodies administering or in receipt of public funds for this purpose. There may be times when we will be required to disclose information by law or for the purposes of preventing or detecting crime or in connection with legal proceedings.

Do we need your consent to share information about you?

Not necessarily. Information sharing can take place without your consent, but will be done in a way which is reasonable and expected. However, in some cases, information may be shared without you knowing about it, e.g. where telling you about the sharing would be likely to prejudice a criminal investigation.

Sharing information to protect public funds

Derbyshire Dales District Council is required by law to protect the public funds it administers. We may share information provided to us with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds, in order to prevent and detect fraud.

Data matching involves comparing computer records held by one body against other computer records held by the same or another body to see how far they match. This is usually personal information. Computerised data matching allows potentially fraudulent claims and payments to be identified. Where a match is found it may indicate that there is an inconsistency which requires further investigation. No assumption can be made as to whether there is fraud, error or other explanation until an investigation is carried out.

The National Fraud Initiative (NFI) currently requires us to participate in a data matching exercise to assist in the prevention and detection of fraud. We are required to provide particular sets of data to the NFI for matching. For information describing which datasets are matched by the Cabinet Office, please refer to the Cabinet Office’s guidance.

The processing of data by the Cabinet Office in a data matching exercise is carried out with statutory authority; it does not require the consent of the individuals concerned under the Data Protection Act.
