Shirley conservation area

Shirley Conservation Area is predominantly a rural area, the northern part of the village forming the Conservation Area.

To the north the Conservation Area includes land and buildings along Church Lane as far as ‘Swallows Nest’. To the east it includes buildings such as The Old School, St. Michaels Church, The Old Rectory and The Row and to the southern boundary, land and buildings directly south of Derby Lane. To the west it includes large areas of land along with Firwell Farm, The Saracens Head PH, The Thatched Cottage and Rushmore House.

The original designation of Shirley Conservation Area was in October 1981. There have been no further amendments to the boundary.  It currently comprises 2.6 hectares.

Historic Assets

Within Shirley Conservation Area there are 28 buildings, of which 7 are listed entries. The Church Of St. Michael’s on Church Lane, is listed Grade II*. The remainder are listed Grade II.  The listed buildings in Shirley range from the churchyard cross to a public house to vernacular cottages. All are recognised for the contribution they make both individually and to the street-scene.

Shirley Conservation Area contains no Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

Buildings at Risk

None of the listed buildings within the Shirley Conservation Area are recognised by the District Council as being ‘at risk’.

Article 4 Direction

There are no additional planning controls, such as an Article 4 Direction, on properties in Shirley Conservation Area.
