Old Matlock Conservation Area

Old Matlock Conservation Area displays a semi-urban character around Matlock Green, a semi-rural character nearer to the Church of St Giles at Old Matlock, and a wider rural landscape setting to the south and east. The Conservation Area runs continuously with the boundaries of Matlock Bridge and Matlock Dale to the west and almost abuts the boundary of Lumsdale Conservation Area to the east.

Old Matlock Conservation Area

The Conservation Area extends to the north as far as St. Giles Walk. To the east it includes Huntsbridge House and adjacent land. To the south it includes as far as No. 174 Church Street and to the west it abuts the railway line and the River Derwent (See Conservation Area map below).

The original designation of Old Matlock Conservation Area was in October 1980 and no further amendments have been made to the boundary to date. A comprehensive Character Appraisal has recently been undertaken and is currently pending public consideration (see below). The total land covered by Old Matlock Conservation Area is 18.9 hectares.

Historic Assets

Within Old Matlock Conservation Area there are 281 buildings, of which 17 are listed entries. Of these, the Church of St Giles and Wheatsheaf House, 106 Church Street are listed Grade II*. The remainder are listed Grade II. The listed buildings in Old Matlock range from the Church of St Giles to Paxton Cottages; from public houses to footbridges. All are recognised for the contribution they make both individually and to the street-scene.

Old Matlock Conservation Area contains no Scheduled Ancient Monuments. 

DRAFT Old Matlock Conservation Area Character Appraisal

A DRAFT Character Appraisal for Old Matlock Conservation Area has been undertaken by Derbyshire Dales District. This document explores the origins and development of Old Matlock including the architectural and historic quality of the village; the setting of the area; the landscape; the character of the buildings and their relationship with the associated spaces; the neutral and negative factors which impact on the area, the general condition, policy and legislation in a conservation area and finally a review of the Conservation Area boundary. The final document (once approved by the District Council) will help to guide future development within the Conservation Area and to preserve or enhance that special character.

Derbyshire Dales District Council is providing the opportunity for Matlock Town Council, the Ward Member, the County Councillor, the County Council and residents and interested parties to comment on the Draft Appraisal.

A six-week period of consultation begins on Thursday 20th October 2011 and ends on Thursday 1st December 2011 and representations are invited on the Draft Appraisal.

Buildings at Risk

One of the listed entries within the Old Matlock Conservation Area is recognised by the District Council as being ‘at risk’ – No. 3 Knowleston Place, Matlock

Article 4 Direction 

There are no additional planning controls, such as an Article 4 Direction, on properties in Old Matlock Conservation Area.
