Old Matlock Conservation Area displays a semi-urban character around Matlock Green, a semi-rural character nearer to the Church of St Giles at Old Matlock, and a wider rural landscape setting to the south and east. The Conservation Area runs continuously with the boundaries of Matlock Bridge and Matlock Dale to the west and almost abuts the boundary of Lumsdale Conservation Area to the east.
The Conservation Area extends to the north as far as St. Giles Walk. To the east it includes Huntsbridge House and adjacent land. To the south it includes as far as No. 174 Church Street and to the west it abuts the railway line and the River Derwent (See Conservation Area map below).
The original designation of Old Matlock Conservation Area was in October 1980. A comprehensive Character Appraisal was undertaken and approved in February 2011 (see below). Old Matlock Conservation Area comprises 18.9 hectares.
Within Old Matlock Conservation Area there are 281 buildings, of which 17 are listed entries. Of these, the Church of St Giles and Wheatsheaf House, 106 Church Street are listed Grade II*. The remainder are listed Grade II. The listed buildings in Old Matlock range from the Church of St Giles to Paxton Cottages; from public houses to footbridges. All are recognised for the contribution they make both individually and to the street-scene.
Old Matlock Conservation Area contains no Scheduled Monuments.
Old Matlock Conservation Area was designated in 1980. No amendments have been undertaken to the boundary since that date. In 2011 a comprehensive Character Appraisal was undertaken and a Draft Appraisal was produced in September 2011. A six-week public consultation exercise then followed. The Appraisal considered the special qualities and interest of the Conservation Area, such as its origins, its archaeological significance, the architectural and historic quality of the buildings, the relationship of buildings and spaces, the landscape and setting of the conservation area, the negative and neutral factors affecting the area and its general condition. The document also included policy and legislative guidance and a review of the boundary, which did not make any recommendations to amend the boundary. Representations received during the six-week public consultation process recommended some amendments to the text of the document. In February 2012 Derbyshire Dales District Council approved the Old Matlock Conservation Area Character Appraisal including revisions to the text.
