Another new walking group was launched in January – the ninth since the Walking for Health scheme was created by the District Council in Bakewell six years ago.
The project now boasts more than 2,900 participants, underlining the Derbyshire Dales’ status as one of the healthiest places to live in the UK.
Many previously inactive Dales people have been converted and now take the opportunity to enjoy brisk guided walks of around an hour tailored to raise activity levels through low to moderate level exercise, while socialising with new people and taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Two new groups started recently in Ashbourne and Matlock – and it means the District Council is always on the look-out for volunteer leaders, who receive free training.
“It’s the camaraderie among the walkers that has really put a spring in the step of this successful scheme,” said Councillor Mrs Janet Goodison, Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Community and Environment Committee.
“However, projects such as this rely on local people who are willing to commit a few hours to help with leading the walking groups, and we are always looking for new volunteers.”
One qualified leader who has been part of the project since its inception is Derbyshire Dales district councillor Carol Walker, who said: “I would encourage anyone to give the walks a try. The project started on the back of GP referrals and has now expanded to cover the entire district. We cater for all ages and abilities, and on top of the obvious health benefits we all have a brilliant time.”
The next one-day walk leader training course will take place at Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Matlock Town Hall headquarters on Friday 19 February from 10am to 4pm. The course is free of charge, lunch is provided and results in a recognised qualification. Contact Rob Wilks on 01629 761381 or email rob.wilks@derbyshiredales.gov.uk.
