Healthy outlook for Martha in 2010

25 January 2010

One lifestyle change has led to another for Darley Dale woman Martha Sharpe – lucky winner of a free gym membership in a Derbyshire Dales District Council competition.
Derbyshire Dales Active health Referral Instructor Helen Hutchinson talks winner Martha Sharpe through the gym equipment at Matlock Lido.

Martha quit smoking in 2009 but as a result reckons she has piled on the pounds.

“My new year resolution for 2010 was to get back in shape by joining a gym, so winning the Derbyshire Dales District Council prize is perfect timing – really great,” said Martha.

She has opted to join the gym at Matlock Lido – one of four operated by the District Council at its leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth.

Throughout January, the District Council is giving away a gym membership each week in a free-to-enter online competition at derbyshiredales.gov.uk – and Martha’s name was first out of the hat in week two.

Chairman of the District Council’s Community and Environment Committee, Councillor Mrs Janet Goodison said: “We know from listening to local people that they are concerned to look after their health and Martha is a great example of someone with a healthy outlook in 2010. We felt the New Year was a great time to run our gym competition and maybe prompt a few healthy resolutions.”

Additional free prize draws for gym memberships will take place on 25 January and 1 February. Entrants can simply follow the competition link at the top of the Derbyshire Dales home page.
