Central Area Leisure Centre (CALC) , The Dimple, Matlock, Derbyshire
We are developing the Central Area Leisure Centre (CALC). CALC will provide an innovative and exciting new sport and leisure facility for local people and visitors to the Peak District. The £12m scheme is on a brownfield site at The Dimple above the A6 road between Matlock and Darley Dale. To view a location plan of the site please use the following link: CALC Location Plan
During the construction of CALC a series of publications entitled 'CALC Matters' will be issued jointly by the Council and Morgan Ashurst (the main contractor). CALC Matters will be published on this webpage every 8 to 10 weeks and will provide an update on the schemes progress and keep you informed of any other CALC related issues. To download the January Issue please use the following link: CALC Matters January 2010.
Morgan Ashurst, the main contractor for the construction of the new Leisure Centre has consulted with the District Council and other stakeholders to determine what is of importance to them in the succesful delivery of the project. This has resulted in a 'Client Charter' that identifies a Key Client Objective and 9 key aims. The Charter can be viewed by fusing the following link: Client Charter.
The planning application for CALC was received by Derbyshire Dales District Council Planning Services Section on 21st May 2009, and was approved by the Councils Central and Northern Area Planning Committee on 4th August 2009. The documents which made up this application can be viewed using the links on the left hand side of this page. A copy of the decision notice can be downloaded from the Related Documents section at the bottom of this page.
CALC will be an all-year-round all-weather indoor and outdoor complex incorporating a new swimming facility that meets regional and county level competition requirements, together with a main sports hall comprising county standard badminton courts and facilities for indoor hockey, basketball, volleyball, five-a-side football, netball, gymnastics and cricket nets.
A second hall will accommodate aerobics, dance, fitness classes, martial arts, parties, table tennis and yoga.
Also factored in are a café, meeting rooms and a community room to replace the present Darley Dale Community Centre, while outside, in addition to existing football pitches, footways and ecological corridors are planned.
Access to the site is already established from the A6 road. On site parking will also be created.
CALC is being funded by a £7m investment from Derbyshire Dales District Council and significant external financial support from emda/DDEP, Sport England and others. The Matlock and Area Recreation and Sports group (MARS) represent local sport and leisure groups and act as a lobby group in support of CALC. MARS has also raised funds for CALC.
We have appointed Drivers Jonas, Manchester, as Project Managers. They have lead the external Design Team that includes all the necessary expertise to take CALC to a position whereby tenders have been received and the firm of Morgan Ashurst has been appointed to carryout the land remediation and construction works.
