We are committed to understanding the private housing market in our area in order to ensure that we can plan our actions and interventions in the most effective manner
In order to give us an accurate baseline from which to work we, along with High Peak Borough Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, commissioned a housing stock condition survey which was completed in March 2003 and which gave us the information on which we based our Housing Renewal Policy.
This survey indicated that our district does not suffer from concentrated areas of housing decline and disrepair, but instead we have problems of poor condition housing scattered around our towns and villages. Where these problems occur they can blight whole communities and consequently we are making strenuous efforts to combat them.
In addition to tackling these problem properties we have adopted a theme-based approach where we concentrate our resources at vulnerable groups and particular problems such as empty properties. Through our Housing Renewal Policy we have made grant finance available to help private sector owners and tenants repair their homes. We also use enforcement tools up to and including compulsory purchase to bring unused property back into use where appropriate.
We have introduced an accreditation scheme for private rented property. This scheme is managed in partnership with High Peak Borough Council and Adullam Housing Association. More information on the Scheme can be accessed from the link below.
