Street Cleansing also includes the removal of weeds from footways,the removal of dog faeces from pavements and verges and the sweeping of Autumn leaves to maintain safety and reduce the risk of flooding.
The main towns centres are cleaned daily through the use of barrowmen supported by mechanical pavement sweepers. The villages are cleaned to a schedule, generally four times a year. If standards within the villages or along the interlinking roads drop additional cleansing will be carried out.

Verge moving is undertaken as part of an Agency Agreement with Derbyshire County Council (opens in a new window). Verges within 30 mph limit zones are normally cut 6 times a year. Outside the urban areas, flail mowing is carried out on many roads. The frequency of flail moving is once or twice a year and is determined by Derbyshire County Council. The purpose of mowing is maintain highway safety.

Fly tipped material, adjacent to the highway or on district council owned land, will normally be removed within one day of it being reported. The district council works closely with the Environment Agency to investigate fly tipping incidents and will take action against those found fly tipping within the district.

District Council Officers are continually looking for improvements in the scheduling of operations and in cleaning procedures. Council inspectors check that works are carried out and assess the level of cleanliness of the district's streets and highways. Continuous improvement has been evident in key performance indicators over several years.
