Pest control

We provide a pest control service.  There is a charge for pest treatments for rats, mice, cockroaches, fleas, bedbugs, lice, woodlice, wasps and ants. A concession of 50% of the standard charge is available to residents who are 65 or over and in receipt of Housing or Council Tax Benefit. All treatments carried out at commercial premises are chargeable. A list of charges is attached below.

The Pest Control service is provided directly by Environmental Services. Two full-time operatives are employed to carry out a variety of pest control treatments and to deal with stray dogs.

Regular treatments are carried out in public areas for rats, mice and pigeons.

The demand for the pest control service fluctuates throughout the year. The summer period is extremely busy with numerous requests to treat wasps. Complaints about rats and mice also increase in the warmer months. A combination of mass tourism and takeaway food/picnics provides an easy food supply for rodents. Please put all litter in the bins provided or take it home.

The Community Services Department also gives advice on vermin-related public health matters and the district council has statutory powers to deal with situations in domestic, commercial and public environments. We work closely with our Environmental Health Team where enforcement work is required.
