The Noise and Statutory Nuisance Act 1993 extended the definition of noise nuisance in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to include noise in the street caused by vehicles, machinary or equipment. This means that we are able to take action against noises such as car alarms, car radios, car repairs, road repairing equipment etc where it amounts to a nuisance
Nuisance is difficult to define but generally speaking it means something that is unreasonable to the average person. When deciding if a noise amounts to a nuisance we take into acount the noise level (how loud it is), how long it goes on for, the time of day at which it occurs and how often it occurs.
In addition the use of loudspeakers in the street between 9pm and 8am is banned (the police, fire and rescue service and the ambulance service are exempt).
If you are unreasonably bothered by noise in the street please contact the Environmental Health and Housing Section at:
