The process was encouraged to break down barriers and prejudices between nations with the aim that this could help prevent another global conflict.
Derbyshire Dales is twinned with Vogelsberg in Germany.
The roots of the Derbyshire Dales/Vogelsberg Twinning began in the early 1960s. The initial link was between the old Bakewell Urban District Council and Alsfeld in Germany. Over the years, links developed and strengthened and in 1995, with the help of the district council, the Twinning Association was formed with the aim of extending twinning arrangements between Derbyshire Dales and Vogelsbergkreis.
As well as nurturing existing friendships, the Twinning Association explored ways of forging new links through schools, Town/Parish Councils, business schools, churches, Local Agenda 21 issues, sporting clubs and recreational/arts pursuits.
In addition, regular exchange visits took place via the English/German Friendship Group.
Whilst the Twinning Association itself was dissolved in September 2000, the German Friendship Group continues to flourish, still organising regular exchange visits.
