About Data Protection and the Freedom of Information Act

Responsibility for Freedom of Information, Data Protection and Data Sharing rests with the Information Rights Division of the Department for Constitutional Affairs, which is part of the department's Constitution Directorate.

The department's programme in this area comprises:

  • Keeping the operation of the Data Protection Act 1998 under review
  • Developing a data protection policy which properly balances personal information privacy with the need for public and private organisations to process personal information
  • Pursuing the UK's interests in data protection internationally, particularly in the European Union and the Council of Europe.
