Derbyshire County’s Stop Smoking Service is challenging people in Wirksworth to get fitter and feel healthier by stopping smoking.

The challenge coincides with the launch of a new drop-in stop smoking service at Wirksworth Leisure Centre which starts on Thursday 13 March. The new service aims to help people to stop smoking and feel healthier and will run every Thursday morning from 9-10am. It is completely free, so no appointment is necessary.

As well as being able to talk to NHS stop smoking specialists, people visiting the service will have the opportunity to see a trained exercise instructor, who will assess whether they are able to join an exercise scheme for a fraction of the normal cost of attending a gym.

The service is being provided by Derbyshire County’s Stop Smoking Service in partnership with Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Councillor Andrew Lewer, chairman of the District Council’s Community and Environment Committee said: “Wirksworth Leisure Centre is a real hub in the local community, and I’m delighted that young and old residents will be able to get free NHS support and advice at such a popular venue.”

Carol Wynn, stop smoking specialist adviser for Derbyshire County’s Stop Smoking Service said: “You are four times more likely to give up smoking with NHS support. These new sessions are great as smokers can just pop along and get free advice when they need it. They also encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles, and starting exercise programmes can massively improve a smoker’s chance of stopping for good, reduce cravings and keep weight down to a minimum.”
