The latest initiative in the battle against fly-tipping rolls into Bakewell on the 6&7 August when the Derbyshire Fly-Tipping Project presents its "Dump it and Leg It" waste advice road show at Bakewell Show.
The road show features a mocked up rogue trader vehicle (picture attached) to hammer home the message to the public that they should always give their waste to a registered waste carrier rather than a "waste cowboy" who is likely to dump it illegally. The road show also features screenings of a public information film on fly tipping produced by the Puppet Broadcasting Company for the Environment Agency. The life sized puppets that featured in the film will be on hand together with Environment Agency and Derbyshire Dales District Council staff to give out waste management advice to people attending the Show.
The road show is part of the Derbyshire Fly Tipping Project, a three-year project funded by the Derbyshire LAA fund, which brings together the Environment Agency, Derbyshire County Council and the eight Derbyshire District and Borough Councils to work collectively to reduce fly-tipping in the county, increase enforcement action against fly-tippers and work with land owners to tackle the problem on their land.
Paul Slater, Derbyshire Fly-Tipping Project Manager, said: "We are delighted to be working with Derbyshire Dales District Council to provide the public with advice on how to dispose of their waste legally and sustainably."
The road show is designed to help prevent fly-tipping by making sure the public are aware of their duty of care for the waste they produce and the need to always give their waste to a registered waste carrier rather than a "waste cowboy" who then dumps it illegally.
"Failure to do this can result in a fine of up to £5,000 if fly-tipped waste is traced back to a householder or business", said Paul.
"If everybody gave their waste to their local council or a registered waste carrier to be disposed of we could immediately cut the amount of fly-tipping in Derbyshire and drive the waste cowboys out of business."
Councillor Lewer, Chairman of Community and Environment Committee at Derbyshire Dales District Council, said: “Derbyshire Dales District Council is pleased to be able to work together with the Derbyshire Fly Tipping Forum and the Environment Agency to raise awareness of the duty of care we all have in making sure our waste is disposed of properly. Fly tipping is an environmental crime that really blights our beautiful district and we are determined to do all we can to put a stop to it. Anyone seeing fly tipping in the district should contact us on 01629 761215.”
