The Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership together with Derbyshire Police is launching a wristband scheme to help combat problems of under-age drinking in Matlock and Wirksworth.
As part of the Under-21 wristband scheme, anyone who looks under-21 is challenged to prove his or her age. Those that provide official ID, such as a passport, driving licence or 'PASS' card, are then issued with a wristband to show they are over-18.
The bands can then be shown that night at participating venues, saving customer's embarrassment and allowing them quicker entry.
All Pubwatch premises in Matlock and Wirksworth are taking part in the scheme. Matlock Pubwatch Chairman Steve Elliot of Harvey’s Bar said: “Pubwatch fully support this scheme. The wristbands will make it easier and quicker to identify those over 18 at a glance and prevent the same people getting asked over again for id.”
A number of businesses selling alcohol including Sainsbury’s and Somerfields will also display posters and challenge drinkers for proof of their age.
Sergeant Steve Edwards, Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant said: "The under-21 wristband scheme is part of a wider programme of alcohol education for young people which we are working in partnerships with other agencies to deliver. We want young people to realise the health implications of drinking too much as well as the social implications.”
Councillor Lewis Rose, Chair of the Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership said: “This scheme is a good example of how the partnership is working together to help keep Derbyshire Dales a safe place to live, work and visit.”
The under-21 wristband scheme is funded through a grant from the Derbyshire PCT Choosing Health fund.
