The Derbyshire Dales is a place where all residents and visitors have the opportunity to participate in sport and active recreation as often as they wish and to a level that suits their personal goals and aspirations.
There are opportunities for people to take part in a wide range of activities, both formal and informal. Sport and recreational activities are always provided by leaders and coaches who are appropriately qualified, licensed and experienced.
Active lifestyles mean that residents of the Derbyshire Dales will be at lower risk of ill health connected to sedentary lifestyles, and the involvement of people in sport and active recreation will contribute to an increased sense of well being for individuals and communities.
Derbyshire Dales District Council provides a range of services including swimming pools, leisure centres and sports development courses. Often these services are managed in partnership with other local organisations such as parish and town councils, and schools.
In particular, the District Council works closely with Derbyshire Sport in order to coordinate sport across Derbyshire.

Active Leisure
Active Leisure is the membership scheme managed by Derbyshire Dales District Council. The scheme was introduced in 2002 in order to find out more about who was using the leisure facilities, and to gather essential information such as name, age, gender, postcode and background. This information helps the District Council to find out how well the service is used, and to work out who isn't using the service. Armed with this information, the District Council is able to market the service to areas of the district, or age groups, or gender if they are under-represented.
Additionally, because the Active leisure Member is able to receive any discounts automatically through the card, such as a disability or low income, any stigma is automatically removed.
As an encouragement to join the scheme, the District Council charges an extra 50p per admission to non-members. The scheme is free to join.
The Active Leisure Membership is available free of charge at all Leisure Facilities and includes information on any discount you are entitled to such as low income or student.

Derbyshire Sport
Derbyshire has a long and established tradition of partners working together to develop sport and active recreation. The Derbyshire and Peak Park Sport and Recreation Forum was established over 10 years ago, with commitment from all of the local authorities, two educational authorities, the Peak District National Park and Sport England. The Forum produced its first strategy for sport in 1998-2004 and secured considerable resources to invest in a range of individual, team and outdoor adventure sports and recreational activities. Over time more sports agencies, other organisations and volunteers became involved in the work of the Forum.
Derbyshire Sport is one of 49 County Sports Partnerships in England and has just been recognised as ‘Fit for Purpose’ by The Department for Culture Media and Sport and Sport England.
