The Wonder of Wool

The Wonder of Wool

After taking part in some Gateway Project workshops in felt making, knitting and other wool crafts, a group of local women decided that local wool was not being promoted as a great material to craft with.  They decided to run a ‘challenge’ to show what could be dome with it.  It was decided to use a local breed the ‘White Faced Woodland’ and fleeces from a farm in Edale were sent off to be cleaned and carded.  The challenge was issued ‘take 50grams of the fleece and make whatever you like – in whatever technique you think is suitable. You may add no more than 25% of other materials’

‘Completely unsure of what response we would get, we waited nervously’ said Rosie Rumble who lives right next door to the farm where the sheep came from.

‘We were bowled over by the variety of what came in – 35 entries, all kinds of beautiful things were made in many different techniques…. To judge them was very hard…’

The entries were displayed at Hope Show in August to enable us to show the local farming community the potential of their fleeces.

We are currently exhibiting the pieces at a variety of local community venues.  Details will be posted here.

It is hoped to run this challenge again in 2008.  If you would be interested in taking part or would like more details about using local wool please visit www.peakwoolheritage.co.uk
