Description: Shifting Sands was founded in 1998 to create stimulating and accessible theatre that is both comic and moving. We like to combine clowning, text, animation and the techniques of physical theatre, together with a strong, simple, visual design. We are particularly interested in using clowning to re-interpret and re-discover classic texts and myths. The company encourages the development of new talent through a workshop and training programme.
Shifting Sands is committed to its teaching programme. Subject areas include: Clown – the art of play, Storytelling Made Physical, Playing with Text, Mask, Devising Theatre, Play and Performance, Commedia dell’Arte, Street Theatre, Shakespeare, Bouffon – the theatre of grotesque play.
Shifting Sands initiates projects that provide opportunities for workshop participants to work with the company's creative team to devise a theatre piece and then to perform this in a professional setting. These projects have taken place with community groups, schools and colleges and with Special Needs groups.
