Raggy Rug Stories at the Farming Life Centre
The Farming Life Centre opened in Summer 05 at Blackwell Hall, nr Buxton. Its aim is to support and record a way of life that is fast disappearing. It will provide a meeting place for farmers and the wider rural community. They have set up a social group and the Gateway project has provided an artist to work with them on some Rag Rug pieces to be hung in the centre. They have looked at the humble origins of Rag Rugging and memories have been stirred in some of the participants, with stories told. They are coming to understand that the craft is now regarded as a vibrant medium by contemporary artists, and are themselves exploring the variety of techniques that the skill covers.
