Description: First Movement develops arts work that promotes the unique creativity of learning disabled people. Since 1988 it has operated projects in Derbyshire Dales and across the East Midlands. First Movement seeks to discover new art forms that reflect the aspirations and experiences of its users. Its participatory live arts events use a rich blend of visual media and performing arts, including installation, movement, projection, large-scale visual arts, drama, music, technology, live sound, and digital imaging. Its projects radically transform spaces and promote individual and group performance.

Spiral, First Movement’s performance company, creates work for festivals and specialist centres using live arts, movement and music. Spiral explores themes in a universally accessible arts language, giving a unique insight into its members' creativity.

Level (live event link) is a radical new Live Arts collaboration between learning disabled people living many miles apart. Using live video and audio links, large scale projection and a range of newly developed technologies, it creates a single arts space in which participants can create and perform with peers they would never otherwise meet. The project is promoting new arts communities of learning disabled people.
