Tai Chi

Tai Chi

It is over five years since the District Council assisted in the setting up of the Matlock Tai Chi Club. The club has gone from strength to strength and as a result a second group was formed in Ashbourne and will be entering it’s third year of operation in Autumn 2005. Both groups have become stand alone organisations and have been successful in attracting external funding to secure their longer term futures.

The clubs were formed as a result of growing evidence that Tai Chi is a very effective form of improving muscle tone, balance and bone density in older people. Tutors for the groups are provided by the Chinese College of Physical Culture which has particular expertise in the running of groups aimed at older people.

What to expect from the Class

The classes last for one and a half hours and focus on using the art of chinese physical exercise to work on co-ordination, reaction and balance.  All of this is a slow controlled form of exercise and within 4 – 6 weeks noticeable improvements in flexibility, balance, strength and confidence are generally noted.  There is a social element to the class with refreshments being provided either during or at the conclusion of the meeting.
