If you wish to request a Bulky Waste collection (special collections for large items) please call the Environment Hotline on 01629 761215 or email environmenthotline@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or call in at the Council offices at Matlock, Ashbourne or Bakewell.
A charge of £14.00 will be made for the collection of up to three bulky items and a charge of £24.00 will be made for up to six bulky items. Fridges, freezers, fridge-freezers and de-humidifiers must be collected separately at a charge of £16.00. Televisions and computer screens must also be collected separately at a charge of £11.00.
Householders over the age of 65 years and those who are Registered Disabled are entitled to receive one free collection of up to six items per household per year between 1 April and 31 March. They are also entitled to the collection of one fridge, freezer, fridge freezer or de-humidifier and 1 television or computer screen. This concession should be requested at the time of placing an order for a bulky collection.
Payment for chargeable collections must be made in advance of the collection being made. You can pay by:
- Cash or cheque at any of the Council’s offices at Ashbourne, Bakewell or Matlock.
- Cheque or postal order through the post to Waste Management, Community Services Department, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Town Hall, Bank Road, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3NN.
- Credit or debit card over the telephone at the time of making the bulky household request. Please telephone 01629 761215.
The collection will be made within 8 days of receipt of payment.
Fridges and Freezers
Fridges, freezers, fridge-freezers and de-humidifiers are collected separately at charge of £16.00. They are collected separately on non-compaction vehicles to prevent the escape into the atmosphere of harmful CFC’s and HCFC’s. Please telephone the Environment Hotline on 01629 761215 or email environmenthotline@derbyshiredales.gov.uk to arrange a collection.
The following are examples of what is meant by one item:-
one mattress
one bed base
one armchair
one wardrobe
one settee
one sideboard

one chest of drawers

Three, three-quarters full refuse sacks are equal to one item (please do not overfill sacks)
Tree branches may be collected when tied with strong string in a bundle which can be lifted in one hand. Branches must be no more than 2 metres in length and stripped of side branches. One bundle will be equal to one item.
A full list of the items to be collected must be given at the time of making the request. Additional items cannot be added to a request once made.
All bulky items must be presented for safe collection, outside buildings, easily accessible i.e. not behind locked gates, in one place and within reasonable carrying distance of the collection vehicle. Items must not be unreasonably heavy.
ITEMS AND MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTABLE AS HOUSEHOLD WASTE
- Excavated material, including soil and sods, clay, gravel, stone, broken concrete, tarmac, etc.
- Greenhouses, sheds, panes of glass, window-frames, internal or external doors, garage doors, concrete slabs, bricks, blocks, plaster, cement, timber, radiators, fireplaces, gas fires, boilers.
- Bathroom fittings i.e. toilet, bath, shower base, shower-screen, wash-hand basin, bidet.
- Kitchen cupboards or base units and sink units.
- Water tanks and cylinders.
- Heaps or piles of loose branches.
- Gas cylinders.
- Oil.
- Liquid waste including any flammable liquids and paint.
- Asbestos.
- Motor vehicle or motorcycle parts including wheels and tyres.
- Hazardous household waste e.g. household chemicals, herbicides, rodenticides, insecticides.
Derbyshire County Council provide a free hazardous household waste collection service. Telephone 01629 580000 for the Environmental Services Department.
The Council will not collect any waste created on household premises by builders, plumbers, decorators, gardeners, electricians, joiners, odd-job men, glaziers, double-glazing installers, central-heating installers, fitted-kitchen installers or any other tradesmen. All contractors should remove the waste they produce when carrying out any work on your property.
Householders who wish to remove large amounts of waste, or waste that does not fall within the definition of ‘household waste’, should look for contractors in the Yellow Pages under such headings as ‘Skip Hire’ or ‘House Clearance’, or in the local newspapers.
